The 2018 Trend Report Inspired by Influencers (And How To Rock Them The Vintage Way)
In the recent years, we have luckily had the opportunity to find fashion inspiration in places other than the runway. With the continuous rise of popularity and influence of fashion bloggers and influencers, not only do we have a more realistic view of trends, but also a more realistic insight of how the latest trends are to be worn by ‘regular people’. Runways are glamorous and the perfect portrayal of well-tailored clothes being rocked by ‘perfect’ people, but it is the real people we look at when searching for ways to pull of the latest trends in real life. It is for that reason that we have done our due diligence and kept a close watch on some of the biggest names in the blogger world – to bring you real trends that you can relate to and rock yourself.
The force awakens
Gone are the days when the power suit looked drab and tired. Unlike the dull and constrictive work-uniform of the past, the suit has definitely gone through a rebirth. We are now presented with two of the most poignant patterns of the season, both incorporated in the mighty suit (red and checkered). From Stella McCartney and Balenciaga, almost every designer has presented their version of the power suit. Some are oversized, some fitted, but they have a few things in common – they’re all super chic and on trend. Fashion bloggers and celebrities have definitely gone mad about plaid, Erica Bodrin being just one of them. One of the best things about suits is the fact that you can wear the pieces separately – a blazer with a white tee, jeans and sneakers – like a true athleisure follower, or go for a more polished and ‘corporate’ look with a silk blouse and classic pumps. Checkered suits are so versatile, they’re practically the new leather jacket, so make sure you own at least one. Even true vintage and retro-loving gals can jump on board with this trend, particularly if they go for the high-rise checkered pants and a fitted blazer with a retro blouse underneath. Oversized is the trend, but fitted has not been forgotten.
Some things never change
Although it might not be the ‘freshest’ thing to come off the runways, minimalism is a trend that has no intention of slowing down. Parisian blogger Marta Cygan is the pure embodiment of the French minimalism. With her effortless hair, her monochromatic outfits and oversized garments, she definitely embodies the essence of the fashion movement. Of course, aside from the classic pieces like high rise pants and black turtlenecks, classic Italian designer handbags and ankle boots, there are always some new trends that keep things fresh. In this case, we’re talking about a mixture of two trends - the meeting of red and the slip dress. Minimalists tend to follow the rules of ‘modest fashion’ so they’ll rarely be seen wearing a slip dress on its own, which incidentally works incredibly well in the winter months. Whether your choice of slip dress will be red or some other color, make sure to dress it down with a simple long sleeve tee for a touch of the ‘cool’ effect.
Vintage girls don’t believe in rocking anything slip or lingerie-like outside the boudoir, so they can feel free to keep it that way and maintain a level of mystery and a whole lot of sensuality.
Thank you Marc
It was Marc Jacobs who took it upon himself to introduce the turban in different shapes forms and fabrics into mainstream fashion, and we would like to take a moment to say ‘thank you’. It’s safe to say that the turban will be this year’s ultimate accessory, one that will be flaunted during all seasons. If you’re in dire need of some inspiration on how to rock this powerful fashion tool, just look at the gorgeous Asiyami Gold and you’ll begin to get a clear picture. White high-rise pants and a summer crop make for an ideal outfit that the turban can complete, but if you’ve got the confidence you can rock it with murky florals, suits and even with a warm winter coat – you just have to dare to wear. International ‘vintage girl living in the modern world – Idda Van Munster, a vintage Instagram icon chooses to wear a turban and head wraps for those days spent at the beach or rocking her signature cardigan looks. Out of all the new trends, the turban is the most relatable to fashion lovers of all eras.
The ultimate ‘it’ girl
When speaking of influencers we simply can’t let Alexa Chung go unmentioned. Fashion influencer and model turned designer has been teaching us the lay of the land for years, and now she is giving us the ultimate lesson with her line. The preppy look, one that has always been around, but mostly as an underdog is finally getting the attention it deserves, so start looking for that crisp white shirt, preppy sweaters and straight-leg jeans, because we’ll be looking at a very smart year. For all the vintage girls out there, all you have to do to make the preppy look your own is to use pastel instead of white shirts and place a fitted cardigan instead of a sweater, and you’re done. With a pair of mid-heel oxfords, you can even keep the jeans.
